JAPAN 1920 Taisho Period Rabbit Ojime Carved In Precious Wood & Onyx
Japanese ojime from the Taishō Period (1912-1926).
This is a beautiful and very cute ojime created in the imperial Japan during the Taishō period, circa 1920. The sculptural ojime was masterfully carved in the shape of a seated rabbit in precious wood with the eyes embellished with tiny round cabochons of black onyx. The detailed craftsmanship is very intricate and is a true pleasure to behold.
Ojime
An ojime (緒締め), lit. is a bead cord fastener used in Japanese inrō (carrying cases). It is typically under an inch in length. Each is carved into a particular shape and image, similar to the netsuke, though smaller.
Rabbits In Japanese Culture.
In Japanese culture, rabbits (usagi) symbolize good luck, longevity, fertility, and prosperity, often linked to the moon where one is seen pounding mochi (rice cakes) in folklore, representing selflessness and sacrifice; they also signify progress (hopping forward), cleverness, and are messengers of deities, appearing in art, shrines (like Okazaki Shrine in Kyoto), manga, and zodiac, embodying virtues like kindness and family safety.
The Taishō Period
This era (1912–1926) was a period in Japanese history during Emperor Taishō reign, characterized by a democratic and liberal movement known as "Taishō Democracy," a shift towards party politics, and increased Westernization, contrasting with the preceding Meiji era and the later militaristic Shōwa era. It saw Japan's rise as a world power, economic growth, and cultural flourishing, but ended with political instability, the Great Kantō Earthquake, and the growing influence of militarism, leading to an ultra-nationalist shift.
