A Korean writing box from the Joseon Dynasty.

This is a beautiful and very decorative antique Korean writing box made during the period of the Joseon dynasty, circa 1880. This box has been meticulously crafted in a rectangular shape with parts carved of reddish patinated wood and polished bronze ormolu parts. Beautifully crafted with precise carvings and fitted with two trays and a hinge rectangular lid. The upper tray would have contained the ink stone and writing implements used during the Joseon dynasty by a scholar. Beneath the tray, ink sticks, paper and brushed were stored. This is a stunning decorative box with excellent eye appeal that can be used for any purpose.

The Joseon Imperial Period

The Joseon Dynasty (1392–1910) was Korea's longest-lasting imperial dynasty, founded by General Yi Seong-gye, who established the capital in Hanyang (modern Seoul). Characterized by Neo-Confucianism as its guiding ideology, it significantly shaped Korean culture, politics, and society, introducing innovations like the Korean alphabet, Hangul, and establishing strong bureaucratic systems. This era saw significant artistic and scientific advancements but ended with increasing foreign pressure and internal strife, culminating in Japanese annexation in 1910.
