JAPAN 1920 Taisho Period Bulldog Ojime Carved In Precious Wood And Onyx
Japanese ojime from the Taishō Period (1912-1926).
This is a beautiful and very cute ojime created in the imperial Japan during the Taishō period, circa 1920. The sculptural ojime was masterfully carved in the shape of a playful seated bulldog in precious wood with the eyes embellished with tiny round cabochons of black onyx. The detailed craftsmanship is very intricate and is a true pleasure to behold.
Ojime
An ojime (緒締め), lit. is a bead cord fastener used in Japanese inrō (carrying cases). It is typically under an inch in length. Each is carved into a particular shape and image, similar to the netsuke, though smaller.
Dogs In Japanese Culture
While the Bulldog isn't a traditional Japanese symbol like the Lion Dog (Komainu) or Akita, it appears through Western influence, notably in the popular Bull-Dog Sauce brand, adopted for its strong, familiar image, and also exists as a borrowed term (burudoggu) in Japanese, representing strength and endurance in modern contexts, though the iconic loyalty in Japanese dog culture centers more on breeds like the Akita Inu (Hachiko).
The Taishō Period
This era (1912–1926) was a period in Japanese history during Emperor Taishō reign, characterized by a democratic and liberal movement known as "Taishō Democracy," a shift towards party politics, and increased Westernization, contrasting with the preceding Meiji era and the later militaristic Shōwa era. It saw Japan's rise as a world power, economic growth, and cultural flourishing, but ended with political instability, the Great Kantō Earthquake, and the growing influence of militarism, leading to an ultra-nationalist shift.
