ART-DECO 1920 Wise Speak No Evil Seated Monkey Sculpted In Black Ebony Wood
Wise Speak No Evil Seated Monkey Sculpted in Black Ebony Wood.
This is a great antique sculpture of Wise Speak No Evil Seated Monkey created in the northern Europe region, back in the turn of 20th century. Most probably from Belgium, during the colonial period of the Belgian Congo, circa 1890-1920. The carving depicts the seated figure of a monkey covering his mouth with his right hand. It was masterfully hand-carved with great proportions in ebony wood, the eyes accented in white and showing original antique patina. The unusual sculpture is mount in a rectangular base from the same period. Have a gorgeous eye appeal, with nice antique patina and display very well. As a piece of European art is a unique opportunity to own.
The "Wise Speak No Evil" seated monkey (known as Iwazaru) is part of a 17th-century Japanese trio (with Mizaru and Kikazaru) symbolizing the principle of not dwelling on, speaking about, or engaging in evil to maintain personal purity. It represents the importance of using positive, ethical speech and avoiding gossip or negative words.
