QING DYNASTY 1700-1740 Antique Archer's Ring Carved In Translucent Jade
An archer's jade ring from the Qing Dynasty.
This is a rare antique archer's ring created during the Qing dynasty period, back in the 1700-1740. The ring is masterfully carved in natural translucent white-green jade and depicts several symbolisms and attributions from the original owner. The superb ring shows the usual traces of use, which we decided to keep as found to preserve the antique patina. Archer's rings are very rare and seldom encountered in great condition like this. The jade is not treated or impregnated.
Archer Rings
In the Qing Dynasty, archer rings, also known as thumb rings, served both a practical and symbolic purpose. Originally, they were used to protect the archer's thumb when drawing a bow. Later, they became fashionable accessories, particularly among wealthy and cultured individuals, symbolizing wealth, status, and even military prowess, given the Qing Dynasty's heritage as a nomadic, martial society. First, the award of jade archers' rings was focused: with a few exceptions, the recipients were army generals who achieved outstanding military success. They had either made an extraordinary contribution in strengthening or defending the Qing empire or in maintaining order and social stability.

The Qing Dynasty
Officially the Great Qing, was the Manchu-led last dynasty in the imperial history of China. It was proclaimed in 1636 in Manchuria (modern-day Northeast China), in 1644 entered Beijing, extended its rule to cover all of China proper, and then extended the empire into Central Asia. The dynasty lasted until 1912. In orthodox Chinese historiography, the Qing dynasty was preceded by the Ming dynasty and succeeded by the Republic of China. The multiethnic Qing empire lasted for almost three centuries and assembled the territorial base for modern China. It was the largest Chinese dynasty and in 1790 the fourth largest empire in world history in terms of territorial size. With a population of 432 million in 1912, it was the world's most populous country at the time.
