ZSOLNAY 1915 Hungary Nouveau Dish Lobster 7 Snake Eosin Iridescent Green Glazed
A decorative lobster plate designed by Zsolnay.
This is a beautiful antique decorative plate created in Hungary during the art-nouveau period by the Zsolnay Pecs Ceramic Factory, back in the 1915. The plate has been crafted with art nouveau patters, depicting the figures of a lobster and seven snakes. Masterfully hand crafted in fired pottery and glazed with iridescent bluish-green Eosin enamel. It is in perfect condition with no chips or previous repairs.

The company was founded in 1853 by Miklós Zsolnay in Pécs, Hungary, is a world-renowned ceramics manufacturer famous for its innovative, iridescent eosin glaze, durable Pyrogranite, and Art Nouveau designs. Under Vilmos Zsolnay (1828–1900), the factory gained international fame, peaking at the 1878 Paris World Exposition and becoming a leading Austro-Hungarian art producer. Established by Miklós Zsolnay, later managed by his son Ignác in 1854. The Golden Age was with Vilmos Zsolnay. Vilmos took control in the 1860s, introducing artistic, high-quality pieces, leading to major awards at World Fairs in Vienna (1873) and Paris (1878). The innovation with Eosin and Pyrogranite was in 1893, the factory introduced the eosin glaze, a metallic, rainbow-hued, iridescent technique. They also developed Pyrogranite, a durable, frost-resistant material favored for architectural ceramics. During the Art Nouveau Era between 1900 and 1918, the factory became a major proponent of the Secessionist/Art Nouveau style, creating stylized sculptural, and often, erotic forms, often designed by Tádé Sikorski, Júlia Zsolnay, and Sándor Apáti Abt.
