St. Anthony of Padua with the Child Jesus wood sculptures typically depict the 13th-century Franciscan friar in a brown habit, holding the Infant Jesus—representing a vision he experienced—and a lily (symbolizing purity). These sculptures, often carved from Lindenwood or pearwood in styles ranging from Italian Baroque to modern, highlight his role as a preacher, patron saint of lost things, and his deep spiritual connection to Christ. Iconography, the sculptures illustrate a vision in which the Christ Child appeared to St. Anthony, highlighting his piety and devotion. He is depicted with a clerical tonsure (shaved head) to distinguish him from other saints, often holding the child on a book (the Bible) or in his arms. As an artistic Style, many, such as the 17th-century Italian school pieces, feature intricate details in the folds of his robes and the facial expressions.
