WINDSOR CHAIR 1800's Sack-Back American Early 19th Century In Wood With Trays
An antique American Windsor writing-arm chair with two drawers.
This is an original antique Windsor chair created in America in the beginning of the 19th century. The chair was totally hand crafted in wood and feature a writing table-top in the right side with an extended support with a small drawer and another, but bigger drawer under the seat. This is a very unusual chair since is featuring the sack-back top extension at the upper part of the backrest, which extends with three cylindrical modules. The chair is quite rare and has been restored and repainted for at least one-hundred-fifty years or maybe more. It is currently blue with previous old gray and green paints, giving it a naive, folk-art character. All parts are original and none have been replaced. The old paint and multiple repaints show a beautiful crackle pattern that adds to its unique character.
This Comb sack-back, spindle and brace back Windsor Writing chair / Desk features a traditional sack-back style Windsor with a comb. It includes a hand sculpted saddle seat, with arms made of a single, steam-bent piece of wood. This particular piece uses the Rhode Island style legs, with a bulb at the middle of the baluster shaped legs (circa 1780-1800). Like many writing-arm Windsor chairs, this is an original adaptation of a normal Windsor with a continuous writing paddle substituted for the right arm. A Rhode Island and Philadelphia style arm support matches the rest of the chair's design. This chair desk features tapered joinery, weight on the seat of the chair causes the joints to strengthen not loosen as is the case in traditional tenon joinery. The strength and stability of the Windsor makes them a treasured American classic.
