W.A. SARMENTO 1960 Pineapple Shaped Covered Compote In .925 Sterling Silver
A Portuguese pineapple covered compote designed by W. A. Sarmento.
This is an absolutely fabulous pineapple shaped tall covered compote created in the city of Porto in Portugal, back in the 1960. The beautiful compote was made during the mid-century period by the W. A. Sarmento company and masterfully crafted in solid .925/.999 sterling silver with hammered and polished finishes. The ovoid body and domed cover chased overall with lobes, on conforming domed circular bases and with writhen finials. The compote is fitted with a removable lid with a pine nut on top. Fully stamped with Portuguese marks in the city of Porto and the full manufacturer signature. This is an emblematic piece of Portuguese silversmiths with gorgeous look.
W. A. Sarmento
They are a prestigious, historic Portuguese goldsmith and silversmith firm founded in 1870 in Lisbon. Renowned for high-quality, handcrafted 833 and 916 silver, the house is celebrated for intricate filigree work, classical, and mid-20th century, designs, with a retail location on Lisbon's famous Rua Áurea (Street of Gold). It has been operated by the Sarmento family for six generations, maintaining traditional artisanal techniques. W.A. Sarmento is well known for producing elaborate silver and gold filigree, along with, sculptural silver items such Rabelo boats and pineapple cups. The main store was situated on Rua Áurea in Lisbon, which also houses a small, on-site museum displaying, historical pieces. Their items are often marked with "W.A. Sarmento" (or "WA Sarmento Lisboa/Porto"), usually combined with Portuguese assay marks, such as the eagle mark for 833 or 916 purities.
