History: In 1954, Van Cleef & Arpels came up with the ingenious concept of 'La Boutique', which was a line of jewelry that catered to a wealthy yet younger set of clienteles who wished to have the highest quality jewelry for daytime wear. Among these creations, perhaps the most popular were the charming jeweled animals brooches that clients quickly flocked to collect. The lion brooch is among the houses most recognizable animals and was so popular that Van Cleef & Arpels has made this design on and off since the early 1960's. Of all the jewelry motifs created by Van Cleef & Arpels in this era, perhaps the most widely acknowledged and emblematic of the house is the Alhambra, which was first unveiled in 1968.
