Udall & Ballou
Franklin Oliver Udall, the founder of Udall and Ballou, was born in Dubuque, Iowa. He opened the first store in Jacksonville, Florida, and in 1888 established the main office on Fifth Avenue in New York City. Udall partnered in his enterprise with his brother-in-law, Herbert Ralph Ballou. Fully established in 1888, Udall and Ballou grew to become one of the best known and most prosperous jewelers in New York during the second quarter of the 20th Century. Best remembered for their wonderful Art Deco designs, the company started as jewelers and silversmiths selling a range of items from diamond rings and gentlemen’s dress sets to silver candlesticks and tea services. The shop was located on 5th Avenue and as their success grew, they expanded and opened branches in Palm Beach Florida and Bellevue Avenue in Newport Rhode Island, as well as an office on the rue Lafayette in Paris. By the 1940s, Udall and Ballou jewelry designs were crafted in yellow gold and included large semi-precious gemstones such as aquamarine and topaz. During the decade, Udall and Ballou experienced a decline in sales, as did several other jewelers during this decade. Their last day of business was December 24, 1949. Udall and Ballou jewels are still prized today for their quality and beauty, and their value continues to increase. Their timeless designs are as wearable today as they were at the time of their creation.
