PROTOTYPE 1920 British Rasp Rack & Pinion Petrol Lighter In Brass Rare Mechanism
A British prototype for a rack & pinion rasp petrol lighter.
This is an exceptionally rare and intriguing semi-automatic lift-arm petrol lighter, dating from approximately the 1920s–1930s, by an unknown manufacturer or inventor. Its highly unusual construction and ingenious mechanical system make it an extraordinary example of early lighter engineering, with no comparable example currently known.
The lighter is masterfully constructed in solid brass with a polished finish and natural patina, presenting a substantial industrial appearance and remarkably precise workmanship. Its unusual mechanism incorporates vertical guide posts and a central geared rack-and-pinion system, which raises the protective cap to expose the wick when the mechanism is released. A push button activates the rack mechanism, while a separate ignition wheel strikes the flint to produce the spark. The petrol-filling screw and flint assembly are concealed beneath a protective lid, resulting in an exceptionally clean and sophisticated mechanical design.
