This is a rare British Art Deco desk petrol lighter, created in London, England, by McMurdo, circa 1928–1930. With its striking architectural styling and skyscraper-inspired geometric patterns, this exceptional table lighter embodies the bold modernist aesthetic of the late 1920s. The lighter is finely constructed in plated steel and mounted upon a distinctive geometric stepped base, giving it a strong and masculine architectural presence. The sides are embellished with precisely executed vertical incised lines, emphasizing the lighter’s streamlined Art Deco character.
The mechanism incorporates McMurdo’s distinctive roller-arm system, with the articulated roller operating the flint and ignition mechanism. McMurdo became particularly renowned for its ingenious petrol lighter mechanisms, including the patented horizontal roller system, which simultaneously operates the snuffer and generates the spark to ignite the wick. McMurdo lighters were produced in England during the 1930s and later decades, with the company becoming known for sophisticated table and half-giant models as well as smaller pocket examples. Founded by a former designer from Dunhill, the English company became famous for high-end petrol wick lighters featuring patent number 590958, characterized by a smooth horizontal roller mechanism that lifts the snuffer and sparks the wick in one motion
