French 1790 Antique Snuffbox In 19Kt Gold And Sterling With Translucent Gray Agate

French snuffbox from the late 18th century.

Beautiful antique piece, made in France during the late 18th century, circa 1790's. It was carefully carved with impeccable precision, from a single piece of translucent gray agate. The two parts are mounted in a custom made frame crafted in 19 karats yellow gold and .950 silver. The outer part of the frame is decorated with textured patterns and the interior has incised organic designs.

It is suited with a double hinge at the back and a push lock on front. The workmanship is fabulous, both pieces are carefully assembled and the interior carving is done with extreme details

Weight: 36.8 Grams, (23.59 Dwt.).

Measures: diameter of 50 mm (1.97 Inches) and height of 17 mm (0.67 Inch).

Snuffbox, small, usually ornamented box for holding snuff (a scented, powdered tobacco). The practice of sniffing or inhaling a pinch of snuff was common in England and France around the 17th century; and when, in the 18th century, it became widespread in other countries as well, the demand for decorated snuffboxes, considered valuable gifts, increased. Some were small enough to fit in a waistcoat pocket, and others were larger; all gave 18th-century craftsmen an opportunity to execute rich and elaborate designs.

Condition: It is in perfect condition, with all parts in function. The agate is translucent and without any chip or crack.
