Millefiori
This is an Italian term for "thousand flowers," is an ancient glasswork technique, famously revived by Murano artisans, that involves creating intricate, multicolored patterns by bundling, fusing, and slicing glass rods (murrines). These slices are arranged in molds, heated, and shaped into beads, paperweights, or vessels, with patterns often resembling flowers, stars, or geometric shapes.
Fratelli Toso
The company was founded in 1854 by six brothers in Murano, Italy, is a historic, family-run glassworks renowned for reviving traditional techniques like murrines and millefiori. Under artistic directors like Ermanno Toso (1930s-60s), the firm specialized in vibrant, complex, and modern art glass. The company closed in 1982. Founded in 1854 by Ferdinando, Carlo, Liberato, Angelo, Giovanni, and Gregorio Toso to produce utilitarian glass, soon expanding to artistic chandeliers and vases. Known for murrines (using cut, colored glass rods) and pulegoso glass. In the early 20th century, they gained fame for floral-style glass and collaborations with artist Hans Stoltenberg Lerche. During the post-WWII era, led by Ermanno Toso and Pollio Perelda, was the peak of their artistic production, featuring intricate, colorful designs. During the 1960s and 70s, Renato, Giusto and Rosanna Toso introduced more modern, often transparent, styles.
