This is a rare American Art Deco desk petrol lighter, dating to 1933, with a distinctive cylindrical form in highly polished steel and an elegant streamlined appearance characteristic of American high-style Deco design. The lighter is fitted with a semi-automatic push-button ignition mechanism, an ingenious system originally designed in 1928 by John W. Schulze for Alfred Vester & Sons. According to the Chase Complete reference, the cylindrical Automatic Table Lighter was introduced in 1933, while the related bulbous Fireball model followed in 1936. Both models remained in production until approximately 1941, when wartime manufacturing restrictions brought their production to an end.
The present example represents the earliest of these distinctive Chase table-lighter designs. Its clean cylindrical profile, polished steel construction, and mechanical sophistication make it a particularly attractive example of American Art Deco industrial design. The lighter is in excellent condition and fully operational, with all original components present. It has been tested and is ready for use, requiring only the addition of lighter fluid.
