The Capitol Lighter is a famous, highly collectible vintage table lighter originally manufactured between 1927 and 1931 by the Steele & Johnson Manufacturing Co. in Waterbury, Connecticut. It is widely recognized by enthusiasts for its complex, exposed lever-and-gear mechanism, which mimics the operation of an industrial machine or timepiece. Key Features of the Original (Vintage) Model: Unique Mechanical Design: It features an exposed, articulated ignition arm. Pressing the side lever activates a system of springs and gears that lifts the lid and spins the flint wheel in a single automatic action. Identification: The body is typically made of brass or bronze, cylindrical or bottle-shaped, and mounted on a circular base. The top plate displays a relief image of the Capitol dome and the inscription "CAPITOL LIGHTER." Design Origin: Although manufactured in the USA, the mechanism was originally invented and patented in Austria by Josef Kluss in 1925. Patent Markings: The date "Sept 12, 1912" is commonly engraved on the lever; this corresponds to an earlier US patent (by George S. Eldred) that was reused for the commercialization of the friction mechanism in North America.
