A French Napoleon III liquor tantalus box.
This is a fantastic liquor tantalus cased-box for liquors created in Paris France during the Napoleon III period, back in middle of 1860. The box-case has been masterfully crafted with classic patterns in precious woods depicting inlaid designs made up of different wood's colors. It is decorated in the interior with gilt brass ormolu parts to hold the components, a removable tray and fitted with sixteen engraved and gilt crystal cups and four decanters with lids. The crystal cups are decorated with engraved insiced floriated and garlands motifs and are enhanced by 24 karats gold. Most probably the crystals have been made by the Baccarat company in Paris. A tantalus is a lockable, 19th-century spirit decanter set designed to secure alcoholic beverages while keeping them visible, patented in 1879–1881 by John or George Betjemann. It served as a secure, decorative way to display high-quality crystal and prevent unauthorized access by servants or guests.
The Napoleon III Style
The Second French Empire, also known as the era of Napoleon III. (1852-1870), was a period of significant change in the world of design. Under the patronage of Napoleon III and his wife Empress Eugenie (1826-1920), the decorative arts flourished. Paris was transformed into a vibrant artistic center, leading Europe in the development of new styles and techniques. The imperial couple were avid patrons of the arts, and their personal tastes had a profound influence on the styles of this era. The design style of the period has long been characterized by a mixture of opulence, grandeur, and historicity, often portrayed as an era of decorative revival. Elements of Renaissance, Baroque, Rococo, and in particular Neo-Classical design history can be seen as having a profound influence on the art and architecture of the time. Yet, the period is also marked by significant technological and industrial advancements, which sparked innovations in design that adapted typical furniture to the rapidly modernizing world. Let’s dive into the gilded world of 19th century antiques, to judge whether the decorative arts of this period were elegant historical revivals, or ingenious design innovations. The box is fitted with hinges, a retractable lid and two doors.
