GUBELIN 1925 Art-Deco Enameled Foldable Purse Travel-Clock In .925 Sterling Silver
An art-deco foldable travel-clock made by Gübelin.
This is a fabulous miniature foldable travel and purse-clock created in Lucerne Switzerland by the E Gübelin & Co. during the art deco period, back in 1925. The craftsmanship of this colorful clock is exceptional and was masterfully hand-crafted in a squared shape in solid sterling silver .935/.999 with polished finish. Embellished in one side with engine turned designs and in the other side with applications or black and green hard glass enamels. Fitted on top with a movable jump ring to wear in a chain or to attach a pom-pom and a slider rail to display in a desk or table.

Dial: The dial is square, gilt analog with golden Arabic numerals inside a black linear frame and steel Breguet hands. Signed, E. GUBELIN LUCERN SWISS.
Case: Squared in .935 sterling silver with engine turned, green and black hard glass enamel and beveled square bombe glass.
Weight: 50.95 Grams, (32.70 Dwt).
Measurements: 51 mm by 34 mm by 53 mm (2.0 x 1.34 x 2.09 Inches).
Hallmarks: The case is fully stamped with pre-1933 Swiss marks, the maker's mark, the Swiss mark of the standing bear for the assay of the .935 silver, the six-digits serial numbers for the case, and signed in full as follows, "E. GUBELIN SWITZERLAND .935 55226 PATENT No. 125267".
Gübelin
The company was founded in 1854 when Mauritz Breitschmid opened a watchmaker's shop on the Pfistergasse in Lucerne. a few years later, in 1861, Eduard Jakob Gübelin was born in eastern Switzerland. he subsequently moved to Lucerne and was apprenticed to the watchmaker Mauritz Breitschmid. The year 1886 marked a special occasion in the young watchmaker's life as Eduard Jakob Gübelin married bertha Sophia Breitschmid, the daughter of his old master. In the same year, the two men became business partners, managing the growing company together. In the 1920s Gübelin opened its own jewelry atelier and at the same time set up a small gemological laboratory so that it could test -and be sure of the authenticity- of the stones its jewelers used. It also continued making and repairing fine watches for a discerning clientele, developing a reputation that soon reached throughout Europe and overseas. Since 1854, the house of Gübelin has always been in the hands of the family and led by a family member throughout time the Gübelin family carefully nurtured its traditions. It kept the company’s core values alive and passed them on to the next generation which contributed to the success and growth of the Swiss house.
