French snuff box in solid gold.

Exceptional rectangular snuff box, created in Paris France during the kingdom of Louis XVI, in the last quarter of the 18th century, circa 1790. It was carefully crafted in the iconic neoclassic style in solid yellow gold of 18 karats. Fitted with a hinged lid and embellished with intricate chiseled and engraved floriated garlands designs and with a geometric guilloche finish.

Weight: 65.25 Grams, (41.83 Dwt).

Measurements: 70 mm by 46 mm by 17 mm (3.5 x 2.13 x 0.79 Inches).

Hallmarks: Stamped eight times with several French marks from different periods.

First set

Stamped with ancients marks from the late period of Louis XVI (1790-1808), with the oval mark of the rooster with number 3 and the maker's mark LFH cartouche.

Second set

Restamped (1808-1819), with marks from the period of the emperor Napoleon and king Louis XVIII. The marks for the title, assay and warranty of the 750 finesse; the head of a lion inside a circle and the standing rooster with the number 3 inside a hexagonal frame cartouche.

Note: The second set of gold assay warranty marks depicted in this box was in use only between the 1809 and 1819.

Note: Snuff boxes were used for containing snuff, a mixture of ground tobacco and scented oils, and were very popular in the 18th century when snuff-taking was fashionable. Highly decorated and valuable objects, they became collectors' items in the 19th century

Collateral: It is accompanied by a presentation jewelry pouch.

ConditionThe overall condition of this snuff box is excellent. Beside the little normal wear, there is no damage to the gold, no dents or restorations visible. This piece has been carefully inspected to guarantee the condition and authenticity.
