A burl wood pocket case designed by Cartier.

This is a fantastic pocket box, created in Paris France by the jewelry house of Cartier, back in the 1920. The fabulous case has been masterfully crafted with carvings of precious polished burl wood, which are mounted in frames made up of yellow gold of 18 karats. The gold parts have geometric patterns, are embellished with applications of white and black enamels and accented with ten European rose cut diamonds. The box if fitted with a concealed three barrels hinge and a push snap lock.

Precious Burl Wood

Burl wood results from harvesting a tree or a part of a tree that has a burl. Redwood “Gargoyle” Burl & Burns in Simpson-Reed Grove, Redwood NP. A burl is a growth on a tree formed from unsprouted bud tissue. The burl forms large, knobby-looking growths on the base and trunk of the tree. Most burls grow beneath the ground, attached to the roots as a type of malignancy that is generally not discovered until the tree dies or falls over. Such burls sometimes appear as groups of bulbous protrusions connected by a system of rope-like roots. Almost all burl wood is covered by bark, even if it is underground.
