BAROVIER & TOSO 1935 Art Deco Round Torchon Picture Frame In Art-Glass & Bronze
An art glass and bronze picture frame designed by Barovier & Toso.
This is a very rare and amazing Torchon round picture frame created in Murano Venice by Barovier & Toso. The picture frame was made during the art deco period, circa 1935-1940 at the Barovier-Toso workshops in the Murano island. It was masterfully hand-crafted with parts made up in wheel cut clear art-glass, polished and gilt bronze, plated nickel and round glass. The technique used to achieve this rich twisted rope effect is called “Rigamenà” and requires a high level of skill on the part of the craftsmen. Fitted at the reverse with a concealed stand for display. Very rare decorative piece in great condition. The patina of the brass is original but this could be polished up if preferred and it could also easily be converted to a mirror.
Rigamenà
This is a traditional technique in Murano glassmaking method used to create twisted, ribbed, or spiral patterns on the surface of blown glass. By placing hot glass into a specialized ribbed mold - often called a molletta - and twisting it before blowing, artisans produce a dynamic, spiral texture that enhances light reflection.
