Trompe L'Oeil earrings designed by Francoise et Claude Chavent (1947-)

Fabulous and very rare vintage piece, created in Montpellier France by the artist and goldsmith Francoise and Claude Chavent, back in the 1980. These sculptural clips earrings has been crafted with geometric patterns in solid yellow gold of 18 karats with a delicate brushed finish that create a great Trompe L'Oeil three dimensional visual effect. They are fitted with comfortable hinged French omega backs for fastening clips and the addition of posts can be easily done.

This piece is part of the hypnotic work of Claude Chavent. Claude create toys in his atelier with perception by burnishing his metal just so, allowing it to catch the light and create dimension where none exists. With a deft subtlety, his pieces defy logic and produce pleasure and surprise in equal measure.

Weight: 13.95 Grams, (8.94 Dwt).

Measurements: 38 mm by 33 mm (1.51 x 1.31 Inches).

Hallmarks: They are both stamped with French marks, the head of the eagle for the assay of the gold, the maker's mark CC inside a lozange cartouche associated to Claude Chavent and signed, "CHAVENT .750".

Claude Chavent, is a French artist jeweler with an studio in Montpellier. With a deft subtlety, his pieces defy logic and produce pleasure and surprise in equal measure. This is the hypnotic work of Trompe L'Oeil of Claude Chavent. "His work is triumph of trompe l'oeil technique; he brings seeming volume and movement to forms while leaving them flat and light. He plays with optical illusions, using the contrasts of metal colors to develop virtual perspective in his dazzling, sometimes startling, jewelry." (Excerpt from Masters: Gold: Major Works by Leading Artists, curated by Marthe Le Van, New York: Lark Books, 2009).

Note: Trompe-l'œil, in French for 'deceive the eye'. Is an artistic term for the highly realistic optical illusion of three-dimensional space and objects on a two-dimensional surface. Trompe l'oeil, which is most often associated with painting, tricks the viewer into perceiving painted objects or spaces as real. Forced perspective is a related illusion in architecture.

Collateral: It is accompanied by a presentation jewelry box.

ConditionThe overall condition of these earrings is excellent. Beside the little normal wear, there is no damage to the gold. This piece has been carefully inspected to guarantee the condition and authenticity.
