ADIE BROTHERS 1933 Birmingham Guilloche Green Enamel Box In .925 Sterling

An art deco guilloche enamel box designed by Adie Brothers Limited.

This is a fabulous rectangular antique case-box, created in the city of Birmingham England at the silversmiths of Adie Brothers Ltd, back in the 1933. The beautiful box has been crafted with great art deco geometric patterns and beveled borders in solid .925/.999 standard silver, with 24 karats gilded interiors. The unusual box is embellished with a gorgeous engine-turned guilloche pattern, which is topped with vivid green translucent glass enamel. The box is fitted with a lid which is mounted in a concealed seven barrels hinge and a pressure pusher lock.

Weight: 93.50 Grams, (60.10 Dwt).

Measurements: 83 mm by 67 mm by 12 mm (3.28 x 2.65 x 0.48 Inches).

Hallmarks: Both parts are stamped with British marks; the rampant lion for England, the mark of the anchor for the city of Birmingham, the maker's mark associated to the silversmiths Adie Brothers Ltd., the gothic letter code J for the assay date of 1933-34, the case number 6, the presentation date April 6 1934 and the retailer's name for Finnigans Limited.

Adie Brothers Limited

This manufacturing firm of silversmiths is said to have been established in 1879. The company was incorporated in 1906 joining the firms of McKewan & Adie manufacturing jewelry, gold and silversmiths and Edward Souter Barnsley for boxes and case makers. In 1914 the directors were listed as Percy James Adie, Hubert William Adie and James Percy Alderson. Their Birmingham manufacturing premises were listed as 45 Frederick Street and 1 Northampton Street. On October 20 1915 Andrew Vaughan Jones is listed as the inventor of the Adie Bros manicure pad. This invention is for a collapsible handle which is located on top of a vanity brush or manicure pad. This was to enable the brushes or buffers to be stored more securely in vanity cases, as then the lid could close tightly on top of the item without leaving a space which would allow the buffer etc to move about during transit. The firm was controlled by Percy Adie until WWII and afterwards by Tony Adie and Frank Taylor. In the 1960s the firm became part of British Silverware and closed in 1968.

Finnigans Limited

The House of Finnigans was founded by Brian Finnigan in 1830. Brian Finnigan established the house as a sole proprietor and opened a workshop in Newton Street Mill. They was a department store which started as a trunk maker in Manchester and later expanded to Liverpool and London. Later in 1875, his son Benjamin Finnigans opened a Finnigans shop in Market Street. Finnigans soon became famous for its high-quality leather goods and saddlery. They was very famous for his luxury luggage and trunks, Later they open another retail store in New Bond Street in London. The House of Finnigans, also manufactured and produced a wide range of luxury products, including trunks, bags, fashion, jewelry, timepieces, and silverware.

Guilloché 

Is a term used in fine jewelry or objects de Vertu to enhance the appearance of boxes, frames, brooches, rings or pendants. Guilloché enamel refers to metal pieces that have been given the Guilloché treatment and then covered with a translucent layer of enamel, giving the geometric patterns underneath the enamel a colorful hue.

ConditionThe overall condition of this box is excellent. Beside the little normal wear, there is no trace of damage to the silver. The enamel is secured in the settings and this piece has been carefully inspected to guarantee the condition and authenticity.
