SEED PEARLS 1920 Art Deco Antique Stations Chain Necklace With Platinum Wires
An art deco necklace chain with seed pearls.
This is a very delicate necklace chain, created in America during the art deco period, back in the 1920's. The chain has been carefully crafted with thin twisted wires made up in platinum and mounted with ninety-seven white seed pearls. It is fitted with a crab security lock.
Seed Pearls
They are very small pearls, popular during the Victorian period as accents set into gold jewelry or woven into long fringed necklaces. Seed pearls were popularized during the Victorian era as a means to accent more elaborate pieces of gold jewelry or long fringed necklaces. A seed pearl is generally defined as a small natural pearl, usually measuring less than 2mm in diameter. Although their early definition stated that they must 'weigh less than quarter of a grain. A nineteenth-century obsession with pearls was evident in the profusion of tiny seed pearls on every type of jewelry imaginable. Imported from India and China, seed pearls were strung on white horsehair or silk and sewn to mother-of-pearl templates to create elaborate designs. The typical seed pearl parure was composed of a pair of bracelets, a brooch, a pair (or two) of earrings, necklace, ring, and an aigrette.
