French enameled brooch with the triumph of Bacchus and cupid.

An exceptional neo-classic French piece, created in Paris in the first quarter of the 19th century, circa 1820. Made up in an octagonal bombe shape, carefully crafted in solid yellow gold of 18 karats with the borders decorated with floriated patterns simulating a Versaillesque plafonnier. The central panel is embellished with a beautiful enameled painting depicting the triumph of Bacchus with Cupid behind. Fitted at the reverse with a hinged horizontal pin bar with a closure hook.

Bacchus, the god of wine, is the central figure and is personified by a boy half-dressed in a red emperor's robe, crowned with vine leaves, holding a scepter in his right hand and a bunch of grapes in his left hand. He is facing forward, seated and enthroned to the left in a two-wheeled Roman chariot which is pushed by the winged figure of Cupid and dragged with blue trims by a pair of white doves. The legend of Bacchus leads this small entourage of mythological characters in his triumphant return from the victories in India. Similar to The Loves of the Gods on the vault of the Farnese Gallery by the Italian renaissance painter Annibale Carracci.
