Maurel has achieved numerous prestigious awards throughout his career, including the Jean–Marie Gauvreau award by Salon des Metiers d’Art in 1995. Gilles Maurel uses contemporary techniques to create his works. Since 1975, when he first started working with metal, he has shown various collections featuring both silver and gold. Reticulation and coloured oxidation on silver are significant part of his artistic approach. From his studio in St Sauveur in Laurentians, Maurel creates unique pieces or small series that are sold in various boutiques in Canada, the United States, and Australia. The jury at the 1995 Salon des Metiers d’Art honored him with the Jean--Marie Gauvreau award, bestowed each year in recognition of the balance, mastery, and aesthetic appeal of craftsman production.
