Trompe L'oeil pendant designed by Françoise et Claude Chavent (1947-)

Gorgeous vintage piece, created in Montpellier France by the artists and goldsmiths Francoise and Claude Chavent, back in the 1980. This sculptural pendant has been crafted with geometric patterns in solid .925/.999 sterling silver with an 18 karats yellow gold vermeil. The surfaces are finished with delicate brushes in different directions that create a great Trompe L'oeil three-dimensional visual effect. It is fitted at the reverse with a fixed ring to wear in a chain.

This piece is part of the hypnotic work of Claude Chavent. Claude create toys in his atelier with perception by burnishing his metal just so, allowing it to catch the light and create dimension where none exists. With a deft subtlety, his pieces defy logic and produce pleasure and surprise in equal measure.

Weight: 3.40 Grams, (2.18 Dwt).

Measurements: 32 mm by 32mm (1.26 x 1.26 Inches).

Hallmarks: Is stamped with French marks; the helmeted head of Minerva for the assay and warranty of the silver, the maker's mark CC associated to Claude Chavent inside a lozange cartouche and signed, "CHAVENT .925".

Claude Chavent

He is a French artist jeweler with an studio in Montpellier. Claude toys with perception by burnishing his metal just so, allowing it to catch the light and create dimension where none exists. With a deft subtlety, his pieces defy logic and produce pleasure and surprise in equal measure. This is the hypnotic work of Trompe L'Oeil of Claude Chavent. "His work is triumph of trompe l'oeil technique; he brings seeming volume and movement to forms while leaving them flat and light. He plays with optical illusions, using the contrasts of metal colors to develop virtual perspective in his dazzling, sometimes startling, jewelry." (Excerpt from Masters: Gold: Major Works by Leading Artists, curated by Marthe Le Van, New York: Lark Books, 2009).

Note: Trompe L'œil, in French for 'deceive the eye'. Is an artistic term for the highly realistic optical illusion of three-dimensional space and objects on a two-dimensional surface. Trompe l'oeil, which is most often associated with painting, tricks the viewer into perceiving painted objects or spaces as real. Forced perspective is a related illusion in architecture.

Collateral: It is accompanied by a presentation jewelry box.
