Decorative abstract vase designed by Gilbert Portanier (Cannes 1926-).

Beautiful piece of art, created during the post war period at the Vallauris factory by the French master ceramist Gilbert Portanier. This sculptural vintage vase was modeled back in the 1950 and crafted in pottery with a modernist bulk shape. The main body is embellished with glazed orange color and a rectangular panel in the center decorated with an abstract design made up in crude terracotta. It is signed in front at the lower part "Portanier". This very nice vase is one of the earliest piece created at his career in Vallauris. It is in perfect condition with the normal productions flaws, like tiny baubles.

Measurements: 482.60 mm by 457.2 mm by 139.70 mm, (19 x 18 x 5.5 inches), (48.26 by 45.7 by 13.97 cm.).

Signatures: At the bottom in high relief, "Portanier Edition Vallauris Decore a la Main", with a label attached, Made in France.

Gilbert Portanier

Gilbert Portanier is one of the ceramists who contributed to the revival of French ceramics from the 1950s to the present day. Established in Vallauris since 1948, He is known for its variety of forms that range from the most classical and structured to the most baroque. After beginning to study architecture in Paris, Portanier quickly turned to painting and drawing as a self-taught artist. After his return to the Côte d'Azur, he met Picasso and began working as a ceramic artist. In 1949 founded the studio 'Le Triptyque', since 1964 have a close cooperation with Rosenthal, from 1966-2009 regular exhibitions in the Rosenthal studios. He has numerous awards and exhibitions, including at the MKG Hamburg, Kunstgewerbemuseum Köln, Musée National de Céramique, Sèvres and many others.

ConditionThe overall condition of this sculpture is excellent. Beside the little normal wear, there is no damage to the any part, with no chips or restorations. This piece has been carefully inspected to guarantee the condition and authenticity.
