This is an antique 19th century sculpture created during the late period of the Qing Dynasty circa 1875. The figure represents the image of Confucius known in the Chinese culture as Sage. It is totally hand carved showing him richly dressed holding a seal with the left hand and a sword in the left hand. The entire surface is embellished with incised organic patterns, flowers and a long dragon. This sculpture is in excellent original, unrestored and perfect condition. It is presented in a customized wood base.

Sage

This figure is related to Confucius, the preeminent Chinese sage, a philosopher and educator who founded Confucianism, emphasizing morality, social order, and lifelong learning. His teachings, recorded in the Analects, focus on self-improvement and ethics, shaping Chinese culture for over 2,500 years. He is revered as the "Greatest Sage". He born in Qufu, State of Lu (modern Shandong province), he showed a strong dedication to learning at a young age. He aspired to political office, hoping to implement his ethical governing principles, but never found a stable, high-ranking position. Failing to find success in politics, he became a highly successful teacher, educating many disciples and promoting the idea of education for all, regardless of status.

The Qing Dynasty

Officially the Great Qing, was the Manchu-led last dynasty in the imperial history of China. It was proclaimed in 1636 in Manchuria (modern-day Northeast China), in 1644 entered Beijing, extended its rule to cover all of China proper, and then extended the empire into Central Asia. The dynasty lasted until 1912. In orthodox Chinese historiography, the Qing dynasty was preceded by the Ming dynasty and succeeded by the Republic of China. The multiethnic Qing empire lasted for almost three centuries and assembled the territorial base for modern China. It was the largest Chinese dynasty and in 1790 the fourth largest empire in world history in terms of territorial size. With a population of 432 million in 1912, it was the world's most populous country at the time.
