MUGHAL Late Art-Deco 1930's Clutch Purse Silk, Gold And Silver With Green Emeralds
Gems set clutch purse from the Mughal Empire.
This is a magnificent and elegant clutch purse created during the art deco period, between the 1930 and 1940. This luxury clutch has been completely hand-crafted in the Mughal style, with parts of fine silk, and decorations of thin wires of yellow gold and silver. The front section is embellished with an assortment of twenty-five natural green emeralds mounted in concealed frames.
Period: Late Deco, Mughal Style.
Materials: Silk, gold, silver and emeralds.
Emeralds: Mounted in bezel settings, with 25 mixed rounds and oval cabochon cuts carved from natural green emeralds, with a combined total weight of about 15 carats.
Weight: 245.5 Grams, (157.40 Dwt).
Measurements: 204 mm by 121 mm by 64 mm, (8 x 4.75 x 2.5).
Hallmarks: Unmarked, electronically tested for for the 22 kt yellow gold and the sterling silver with results as follows, ".916/.999 Au; .800/.999 Ag."
The Mughal Style
Five centuries ago, India was under the rule and influence of the Mughal dynasty. The Mughal royalty were connoisseurs of architecture, arts, food, clothing and of course, jewelry. During the Mughal rule, jewelry-making was given utmost importance. This art gave birth to unique jewelry pieces studded with chunky gemstones and enameled with motif designs. Royal family members and people of high rank proudly displayed such jewelry all over their bodies, from jeweled turbans and head-jewelry to thick-set toe rings. The Mughal emperors wore silk turbans sequined with decorative, drooping feather-like ornaments. These turban ornaments are cast in enameled gold and are augmented with precious gemstones and pearls. Such head jewelry was made of either gold or silver and decorated with precious gemstones and quality beads.
Condition: The overall condition of this Mughal clutch purse is excellent. Beside the little normal wear, there is no damage and the 25 emeralds are secured in the settings. This clutch was carefully inspected to guarantee the condition and authenticity.
