-Continental 1850 Compass And Sundial Carved in The Shape of a Terrestrial Globe

An antique desk Sundial and compass.

Surely this unusual sundial and compass will be a great conversation piece. This piece was created in Europe and most probably in Germany during the middle of the 19th century, circa 1850. The sundial has been carved with beautiful details in two pieces as a sphere in the shape of the terrestrial globe. All details are insiced in low relief showing the seven continents, the oceans, the main seas, the poles with the parallels and the longitudes, all this accented in black and ochre inks. The piece is fitted with a five-barrels brass hinge and a mechanical push button to open. A cotton cord hold the base and the lid open in tension to read the hour marked by the sun.
