CARVED CICADA AMULET FROM THE QING DYNASTY (1644-1911).

AN ANCIENT PORTABLE AMULET SCULPTURE OF A CICADA (CIGADA), FROM THE CHINESE, QING DYNASTY (1644-1911) PERIOD, Circa 18th CENTURY. IT WAS HAND CARVED FROM NATURAL TRANSLUCENT NEPHRITE WHITE JADE SHOWING THE THREE DIMENSIONAL FIGURE OF A CICADA

VERY NICE PIECE, WITH GREAT CARVED DETAILS ON TOP AND BOTTOM. IS SUITED WITH A PAIR OF TINY HOLES TO WEAR INTO A CORD OR TO CARRY ON, IN A POCKET. 

THIS LITTLE CARVED SCULPTURE, HAVE A TOTAL WEIGHT OF 22.1 Grams (110.5 Carats) AND A MEASURES OF 45.5 BY 30.2 BY 13.1 mm (1.79 x 1.19 x 0.51 Inches).

IN GENERAL CHINESE LORE, CICADAS ARE CREATURES OF HIGH STATUS. THEY ARE CONSIDERED PURE BECAUSE THEY SUBSIST ON DEW AND LOFTY BECAUSE OF THEIR PERCH IN HIGH TREETOPS. THE CICADA IS AN ANIMAL REPLETE WITH SYMBOLISM: RECURRING THEMES ARE RESURRECTION, IMMORTALITY, SPIRITUAL REALIZATION AND SPIRITUAL ECSTASY. SINCE ANCIENT TIMES, THE CICADA HAS BEEN SEEN AS A SYMBOL OF RESURRECTION, AN ASSOCIATION THAT OWES TO ITS FASCINATING LIFE CYCLE.
