Italian 1880 Classic Etruscan Rare Colorful Bracelet In 18Kt Gold With 3.35 Ctw Diamonds
A unusual Etruscan revival bracelet.
Very unique and rare Italian grand-tour bracelet created in the 1880's, It is highly decorated with Etruscan revivals motifs and crafted in solid yellow gold of 18 karats. Is embellished with three-dimensional elements, with multiple applications of black and multicolored hot enamel. The bracelet is composed by 7 hinged elements and suited with a discrete safety push lock.
It is mounted with 6 high relief cameos carved from lava (limestone), with figures of classic ladies dressed in attires of the Etruscan, Egyptian and Greek-Roman period.
Accented, with nine natural color gemstones such; 3 emeralds, 3 rubies and 3 sapphires. In addition have 65 old European rose cut diamonds, with a combined weight of 3.35 carats, G/H/I/J color, VS/SI clarity.
This piece have a total weight of 91.9 grams and a length of 6.75 inches.
History: Between the 1860 and 1890, ancient cities were discovered, such as Troy, Pompeii and Alexandria. Archaeological excavations in Egypt, Greece and Rome, discovered artistic pieces of these ancient cultures. These fabulous discoveries, stimulated cultural trips to these countries, popularly called "grand tour". Being the case that the enthusiast visitors bring back small objects, like souvenirs to be assembled into jewelry.
The starting point of these trips were in the cities of Rome and Venice. this is why the craftsman's of these cities created small and interesting objects with ancient characteristics like this bracelet.
Revival jewelry: The styles from the renaissance and middle ages, begun in the 1850’s, The Renaissance and Egyptian revivals were joined by a classical revival of Greek and Etruscan styles to conform a new aesthetic. As a result of the construction work on the Suez canal in the mid-1860’s and the Egyptian excavations of Auguste Mariette and the resultant exhibit of Egyptian treasures at the exposition Universelle in 1867, a fascination for all things Egyptian and ancient cultures developed.
Note: An interesting historical side light is that cameos like these have been traditionally referred to as "lava" cameos. However, they are not actually carved in lava, but rather the dark colored limestones that are indigenous to the region around Pompeii.
