FRENCH 1775 Enameled Cross of Saint Louis In 18Kt Gold With Diamonds And Emeralds
Ancient French cross of St. Louis.
This is a very rare antique catholic cross from the French order of Saint Louis, created in Paris France around the 1775. The cross has been crafted during the reigning period of king Louis XVI in solid yellow gold of 18 karats with parts made up in silver for the settings of the diamonds. It is embellished with applications of white glass enamel and adorned with four fleur d'Lys geometrically placed in the center. The cross is mounted with a great assortment of thirty-one natural earth mined gemstones such: Colombian green emeralds and rose-cuts diamonds.
The pendant-cross is fitted on top with a movable oval ring to wear in a chain. Curiously, this cross is provided with eight tiny rings at its ends. We believe that the cross could be sewn through said rings to a coat of arms or to the clothing itself as a symbol of distinction. Most likely this cross was a gift with royal provenance. The Royal and Military Order of Saint Louis (French: Ordre Royal et Militaire de Saint-Louis) is a dynastic order of chivalry founded in 5 April 1693 by King Louis XIV, named after Saint Louis (King Louis IX of France).
