An art deco guilloche enamel box designed by Joseph Gloster  Limited.

This is a fabulous rectangular antique case-box, created in the city of Birmingham England at the silversmiths atelier of Joseph Gloster Ltd., back in the 1936. The beautiful box has been crafted with great art-deco geometric patterns and curved borders in solid .925/.999 standard silver, with 24 karats gilded interiors. The unusual box is embellished with a gorgeous engine-turned guilloche pattern, which is topped with white translucent glass enamel. The box is fitted with with a lid, a concealed seven barrels hinge and a pressure pusher lock.

Weight: 110.95 Grams, (71.15 Dwt).

Measurements: 83 mm by 70 mm by 10 mm (3.25 x 2.75 x 0.30 Inches).

Hallmarks: Both parts are stamped with British marks; the rampant lion for England, the mark of the anchor for the city of Birmingham, the maker's mark JG LTD associated to the silversmiths Joseph Gloster Ltd., the gothic letter code M for the assay date for the years 1936-37. 

Joseph Gloster Ltd

The company was founded in 1880, operating at Lion Silver Works, Hockley Hill in Birmingham, England. The company invested money to invent devices and manufacturing methods to improve their items, expanding the company through the Edwardian period. By the 1920s the firm was entering patents entered by J Gloster Ltd and Ernest Gloster, entered from 33 Hockley Hill, Birmingham, whilst still being known at their aforementioned address. The silversmiths J. Gloster Ltd were highly regarded for both their sterling silver & silver plated items from the Victorian era until the 1960s. The company was founded in 1880. Their premises was situated at Lion Silver Works, Hockley Hill in Birmingham, England.  They were a British Industries Fair Listed Exhibitor in 1929.

Guilloché 

Is a term used in fine jewelry or objects de Vertu to enhance the appearance of boxes, frames, brooches, rings or pendants. Guilloché enamel refers to metal pieces that have been given the Guilloché treatment and then covered with a translucent layer of enamel, giving the geometric patterns underneath the enamel a colorful hue.

ConditionThe overall condition of this box is excellent. Beside the little normal wear, there is no trace of damage to the silver. The enamel is secured in the settings and this piece has been carefully inspected to guarantee the condition and authenticity.
