Mythological fish brooch, designed by Oreste Giovanni Corletto.

Fantastic piece created in Venice, Italy by the famous jewelry house of Corletto between the post war and the mid century periods, back in the 1960. This gorgeous brooch has been carefully crafted with impeccable details in solid yellow gold of 18 karats with textured finish and platinum parts for the setting of the diamonds. Suited at the reverse, with a double hinged pins bars for stability and a mechanical security lock.

The brooch represent a three-dimensional mythological fish with tails made in the chinoiserie manner. Is decorated with exceptional applications of white hot enamels.

The platinum part of the fish's head is embellished with a pave setting of 65 European round brilliant cut diamonds, with a combined weight of 2.62 carats, F/G color, VS-2 clarity. The eye is accented, with one bezel mounted with a round brilliant cut of a Burmese vivid red ruby of 0.25 carats.

The craftsmanship is really impressive. It was assembled from four independent pieces attached together with screws and pins. The tail, the crests and the mouth of the fish was treated with burnish, Florentine and brushed finishes.

It is pretty heavy and large, with a total weight of 40.95 grams and a measurements of 55 mm by 56 mm (2.16 x 2.20 Inches).

Stamped, with the maker's mark, the hallmark for the assay of the gold, "18KT .750".

Giovanni Corletto was the head of the famous Italian family of master jewelers from Venice, commonly known as Corletto. Oreste Giovanni Corletto trademarked the "Corletto" name for use with jewelry in 1962 and began offering fine jewelry designs fully signed in 1963. The company Tishman & Lipp formed Corletto Inc. in America in 1963, in partnership with Oreste Corletto of Italy. The World War II was behind, the fifties gave the space exploration and rock n roll, while the sixties found new interest in natural materials and simplicity. Europe became the new leaders of style and fashion with the “City Gent” look while Paris, Rome, and New York became the Fashion Capitals of the world. America was finally open to foreign trade and Corletto was among the first to import a full collection of Italian merchandise for resale to the retail trade. Corletto designs were inspired by nature and figurative art, crafted with 18 karat gold, pearls, gemstones and diamonds along with finely carved Blackamoor figures and enamel work. He was known for his fine quality and craftsmanship.

Note: Florentine or Fiorentini finish is a crosshatched decorative technique engraved into the surface of a precious metal. It is usually applied by a hand tool and consists a series of parallel lines engraved in two directions perpendicular to each other

Condition: The overall condition of this brooch is impeccable. Beside the little normal wear, there is no damage to the gold, the platinum or the enamel. All the gemstones, are secured in the settings. This piece has been carefully inspected to guarantee the condition and the authenticity.
