FRENCH 18th Century Baroque Egg Shaped Box In 18Kt Gold With Agate & Bloodstone
French baroque egg-shaped box.
An exceptional beautiful box, created in Paris France during the late 18th century, circa 1780. The box is most probably a snuff box, designed in the Louis XV and Baroque style in the shape of an egg and has been carefully crafted in solid yellow gold of 18 karats with chiseled floriated and organic details. It is accented in the middle with a framed cartouche with applications of white glass enamels and the legend, "MON AMITIE VOUS L'OFFRE", (My friendship offers it to you). It is fitted with a discrete concealed five-hinges barrels and a push thumb. The box is embellished in the interiors with two earth mined natural carved gemstones, such: blue lace agate and green bloodstone. An egg became a symbol of life and friendship because it encloses nascent life to emerge from it. It embodies the idea of rebirth and rejuvenation in the cycle of life, reflected also in its shape, with neither beginning nor end.
