*Amy Roper Lyons Rare Cloisonne Enameled Grasshopper Pendant in 18 Kt Yellow Gold
Gorgeous grasshopper pendant Designed by Amy Roper Lyons.
Magnificent artistic piece of jewelry, created at the jewelry atelier of the talented master goldsmith and designer Amy Roper Lyons. This convertible pendant-necklace-brooch has been carefully crafted in solid yellow gold of 18 and 24 karats, with highly textured and brushed-satin finish. Suited at the reverse, with a pair of tension hooks to wear into a chain as a pendant and a hinged horizontal pin with a trombone lock to wear as a brooch.
The design depicts the three-dimensional figure of a grasshopper with both wings fully extended. The wings are embellished with applications of several layers of multicolor Cloisonne enamels, with incrustations of 24 karats gold flakes. The eyes are mounted with a pair of natural white pearls of 3mm.
Has a total weight of 48.5 Grams and a measurements of 58.5 mm by 101.6 mm by 12 mm (2.3 x 4 x 047 Inches).
Stamped, with the maker's mark, the gold assay hallmark and signed, "ROPER .750".
Amy Roper Lyons, is a studio jeweler and enamelist. Her work is concerned with the marvelous variety of form and color found in the natural world. Inspired by her garden and long walks along the seashore near her home, she creates one-of-a-kind and limited edition pieces in high-karat gold, enamels, and gemstones. Pieces are hand fabricated out of gold and enamels, which are colored glass powders applied in thin layers and fired in a furnace.
Lyons recently spent a year living by the sea coast in Ireland. Long walks along the shore, peering into tidal pools, sparked her current series about marine life. Her aim is to share her enchantment with these graceful creatures, and allow the viewer to see them in a new light.
Lyons award-winning jewelry has been published in magazines and books such as 500 Enameled Objects, Ornament, Art Jewelry Magazine, and Jewelry Artist. Lyons' jewelry is exhibited nationally at museums, galleries and craft shows. Lyons has taught jewelry and enameling at the New Jersey Center for the Visual Arts, the Newark Museum, and Peters Valley Craft Center. She received her BFA from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, PA.
Cloisonné is an enamelling technique in which the pattern is formed by wires soldered to the surface of the object to be decorated, which is usually made from copper, forming cells or cloisons, each of which holds a single colour of enamel paste which is then fired, and ground and polished. The champleve technique also uses an enamelling technique, but the cells are formed by carving into the surface ot the object, or in the casting. The cloisonne technique has been in use since the 12th century BC in the west, but the technique did not reach China until the 13th or 14th century. It became popular in China in the 18th century. Initially bronze or brass bodies were used, and in the 19th century copper, at which time the quality of th eitems produced began to decline. Chinese cloisonné is the best known enamel cloisonné, though the Japanese produced large quantities from the mid-19th century, of very high technical quality. In the west the cloisonne technique was revived in the mid 19th century following imports from China, and its use continued in the Art Nouveau and Art Deco periods.
