Lucas created highly imaginative and sculptural jewels, often inspired by his deep appreciation of nature. This extraordinary ring, designed for Cartier, takes the form of a fantastical floriated plant, with a double shank of textured gold rising organically and culminating in dynamic, spiked blooms and delicate filaments, each tipped with sparkling round brilliant-cut diamonds.

This exceptional and extremely rare piece is conceived as a one-of-a-kind creation, masterfully crafted in solid 18-karat yellow gold, combining polished and textured finishes to enhance its bold, volumetric presence. The design draws upon organic, foliate forms, with the body of the ring richly decorated with engraved motifs reminiscent of natural elements. The composition is further enhanced by fourteen well-matched white diamonds, carefully set to provide brilliance and contrast, and accented by two fine white pearls, adding softness and refinement to the sculptural design. A highly unusual and visually striking statement ring, this piece exemplifies artistic innovation and exceptional craftsmanship, offering remarkable presence and eye appeal. Lucas works are distinguished by its sculptural quality and bold artistic vision—characteristics clearly embodied in the present ring.

Roger Lucas

He was a Canadian designer who was born in 1936. Lucas grew up around jewelry; seeking independence, he studied in Paris at the Ecole des Arts Decoratifs, raced motorcycles for a few years, and managed the Cartier boutique in Monte Carlo. By the late 1960s, Roger returned home to Montreal and designed most of Lucas jewelry. However, he sought a more international presence and found it with Cartier and an invitation to exhibit and tour the world with his creations. The jewels had three main influences: nature (especially underwater) geometry, and space. Roger Lucas created one-of-a-kind pieces with a timeless quality, and although precious stones were sometimes incorporated, he considered his jewelry artwork, not investments. Thinking of himself as a designer first, a jeweler second, Lucas felt his work could just as easily be translated into large-scale public sculptures. According to the Cincinnati Art Museum's website, Lucas theorized that rings "...could be thirty feet high or small enough to fit on a finger. Lucas described these pieces as sculpture for the hand. He thought of them as sensual and intimate, anticipating that women would never want to remove them."

History

This piece it belongs to the period of 1968 and 1970. In 1969, Michael Thomas became president of the New York City branch and was instrumental in hiring young designers who modernized the company’s lines such Cesar, Aldo Cipullo, Jean Dinh Van, Roger Lucas, Jean Mahie, and Lisa Sotilis. On October 03,1969, Cartier launched a collection of about 200 jewelry pieces entitled, Astrological, Underwater and Geometric, all create by these Youngs artists designers, all designed for Cartier and examples of their work were included in the exhibition.
