Desk triple seal wax stamp.

An extremely rare and very unusual Victorian piece, created in England in the mid of the 19th century, around the 1840 and 1850. This desk triple seal has been exceptionally crafted in rich yellow gold of 18 karats with formed as an ivory fist wearing a small ring with a blue turquoise on its little finger. Clasping a baton, which on each ends are mounted with a matrix of bloodstones, one engraved with a Ducal crown and the other engraved with the initial H.

The main intaglio is oval, engraved with a seated Chimera facing to the right with a Ducal crown on top. The pommel and both collars are chased and pierced with textured scrolls above foliate-engraved.

Bloodstone Gemstones: Mount with 2 round flat intaglios of natural bloodstone, one carved with a crown and the other with an H

Carnelian GemstonesMount with 1 oval intaglio of natural carnelian, carved with a seated Chimera to the right with a Ducal crown on top.

Weight: 38.20 Grams, (24.48 Dwt).

Measurements: 68 mm by 39 mm by 20 mm (2.68 x 1.53 x 0.79 Inches).

Literature: Very similar to one offered in Sotheby's, London, 12 December 2003. Treasures from the Rothschild Collection: Property of the late Nathaniel Mayer Victor, 3rd Lord Rothschild, lot 112 illustrated, see figure.

Note: In heraldry, the beautiful mythical chimera is a very odd looking creature in heraldry with the head abreast of a woman, the forepaws of a lion, the body of a goat, the hind legs of a griffin (the legs of a lion and claws of an eagle), and the tail of a dragon. It is not found it heraldry very often and is not unlike the sphinx in many ways. Denotes strength, military courage and leadership. The crown is an emblem of victory, sovereignty, and empire in heraldry. It is a visible sign of success, thus the term 'crowning achievement', and its significance as the decoration of the ultimate level of rank and power, makes bearing the crown a great honour.

Collateral: It is accompanied by a presentation jewelry box.

Condition: The overall condition of this triple seal is excellent. Beside the little normal wear, there is no damage to the gold. All gemstones are secured in the settings. This piece has been carefully inspected to guarantee the condition and authenticity.
