French Paris 1880 Neoclassic Walking Cane In 18Kt Gold With Carved Amber And Macassar Ebony
French neoclassical precious stick cane.
An exceptional and luxurious masterpiece of art, created in Paris France at the end of the 19th century, circa 1880-1890. This marvelous walking stick was crafted with very rare and precious materials with impeccable attention to details . The main cane is carved with a calibrated cushioned entasis from a hard piece of natural macassar ebony wood. The handle is made up in the shape of the mythological figure of a ram (capricorn) with a fishtail, crafted in solid yellow gold of 18 karats and finished with chiselled textures and engraved with neoclassical motifs.
The body of the ram is embellished with a single solid smooth piece, carved from natural translucent baltic amber.
The gold parts are stamped with French hallmarks; the eagle's head for the assay and warranty of the 18kt gold and the maker's maitre cartouche.
Has a total weight of 245.5 Grams and a measurements of 901 by 114.3 by 26 mm (35.5 x 4.5 x 1.02 inches).
Provenance: Acquired in Milan, Italy in the 1980's, a private collection in NYC. A private collection in Palm Beach, Florida.

Note: Makassar (Macassar) ebony, is a species of flowering tree in the family Ebenacea that is endemic to the island of Sulawesi in Indonesia. The common name Makassar ebony is for the main seaport on the island, Makassar. Makassar ebony wood is reported to be a strong variegated, streaky brown and black, and nearly always wide-striped. It is considered a highly valuable wood for turnery, fine cabinet work, and joinery and is much sought for posts in traditional Japanese houses. Japan used to be the main importer of this wood. It is also used as a wood in fingerboards for guitars and other related instruments and very fine jewelry.
Condition: The overall condition of this piece is excellent. Beside the little normal wear, there is no damage to the gold or the wood. The amber is secured in the settings. This piece has been carefully inspected to guarantee the condition and authenticity.
